Is a GPS Mobile Navigation
System Practical?
I can still remember the early consumer model GPS mobile
navigation systems that came onto the market. The software ran
on your laptop which had to be connected to a small dashboard
mounted antenna. Although the technology was amazing for those
of us
who never experienced it
before, you were severely limited due to using the large
battery powered laptop. Most early users simply placed the
laptop on the seat next to them but needless to say you
couldn't check your location while keeping your eyes on the
road. Back in those days the practicality of their regular use
could certainly be questioned.
The GPS mobile navigation system has evolved into a very
practical driving aid. The days of trying to read a folded map
in front of the steering wheel while driving is long gone. The
new GPS navigation systems mount either on the windshield or
dashboard and besides being within your natural field of
vision, they include top quality voice driving
instructions.
Of course for any who have not experienced the convenience
of using a GPS mobile navigation system, they might think they
are just another toy. But once you experience the convenience
of their use, you'll wonder how you ever got along without
one.
The first time I used one of the more common GPS systems was
trying to navigate through an unfamiliar city at night during a
summer thunderstorm. Although hesitant at first, I learned to
trust that sweet female voice coming from my dashboard mounted
unit. Although poor visibility prohibited my reading any street
signs, I drove through the city without a problem. After that
trip, I was sold.
Today there are literally thousands of GPS mobile navigation
units on the market. In the past few years, I've had the
opportunity to use several of the best known brands and models.
I must admit, that the technology continues to amaze me and I'm
sure that most new users will find as I did that once you start
using GPS in your car or truck you will wonder how you ever did
without. Even when making a trip to a familiar location, I
still appreciate the GPS unit's function of telling me how far
I have to travel and amount of time remaining until I reach my
destination. It's very useful when trying to make an
appointment on time.
There is no doubt, a GPS mobile navigation system is a great
accessory to add to your vehicle. The more you travel to
unfamiliar locations, the more you will appreciate it's
convenience.
